This recipe for easy mashed sweet potatoes is one of my go-to side dishes. It’s a pretty perfect recipe: it’s fast, flavorful, really healthy (sweet potatoes are a super food!), and requires just a few ingredients. Sweet potatoes also last quite a while, so it’s a vegetable I turn to when I’m getting toward the end of my fresh produce supply.
A Favorite Ingredient
If you’ve spent any time on this site, you’ll note that chipotles are one of my favorite ingredients. And for good reason. Chipotle peppers are inexpensive, last a really long time in the refrigerator, and are packed with flavor. I find chipotles spicy, but not over-the-top with a great smoky flavor from the preservation process–chipotles are smoked, dried jalapenos! The adobo sauce from a can of chipotles is a bonus ingredient that adds even more flavor to a dish.
I really love pairing chipotle peppers with sweet ingredients (see my recent recipe for honey chipotle shrimp). I amped up the natural sweetness of the sweet potato with a bit of honey. But, you could use brown sugar, maple syrup, or agave if that’s what you have. Remember: this is an easy mashed sweet potato recipe so just use what you have; it will be ok!

What to Serve with Mashed Sweet Potatoes
These honey chipotle mashed sweet potatoes go really well with BBQ. I love serving them with pulled pork or ribs–or even simple BBQed chicken. They are also at home accompanying any grilled or roasted meats.
Or here’s an idea: replace the mashed potatoes in my Mexican shepherd’s pie with these mashed sweet potatoes!

Easy Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Chipotles and Honey
Ingredients
- 1 ½ lbs sweet potatoes peeled and cut into ~2-inch chunks
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 canned chipotle pepper finely minced
- ½ tbsp adobo sauce (from the can of chipotle peppers)
- 1 tbsp honey
- ½ tsp salt
Instructions
- Place the sweet potatoes in a medium pot and cover with water. Add a pinch of salt. Set over medium-high heat, cover, and bring to a boil. Once the water is boiling, you can uncover so that the water doesn't boil over.Boil sweet potatoes until tender, about 8-10 minutes. To check for tenderness, pierce a steak knife into one of the larger chunks of potatoes. If it goes through easily, your sweet potatoes are done.
- Drain the sweet potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter, chipotle pepper, adobo sauce, honey, and salt.
- Mash with a potato masher until they reach your desired texture. I like them mostly mashed with a few chunks.Taste and season with more salt if you'd like.
